Mother’s / Parent’s Helper

Job Description - while the parent(s) is at home. Often referred to as “an extra set of hands”, Mother’s/ Parent’s Helpers can also be a day nanny for parents who work at home. Mother's/ Parent’s helpers generally have very similar responsibilities to Nannies. The main differences between a Mother's/ Parent’s Helper and a Nanny are typically:

  • With a Parent's Helper, a parent (often the Mother) is usually present in the home while the Helper is carrying out her responsibilities of caring for the child/children and household and therefore a parent’s helper is not solely responsible for tasks a nanny carries out (as the parent is usually not available during the nanny’s working hours). The Mother's Helper is still responsible for carrying out many of the designated tasks such as helping to care for children, cleaning the house, and picking up the child/children from school.
  • Since a parent’s helper is not carrying out the caring responsibilities solely on her own, the experience required from a Mother's Helper may be less extensive than a Nanny’s (and therefore, the wage involved may be lower than a nanny’s).
